Mauritius, an island country in the Indian Ocean, is located off the eastern coast of Africa. Here is something to let you know better about it before your trip.
  Plants and Animals
There are many kinds of native wild plant species in Mauritius even though little original forest is left. The wild animals include the sambar(a long-tailed, dark brown deer) as well as a variety of birds and insects. The island was once home to the dodo, a flightless bird that was extinct in the late 17th century.

The education in Mauritius starts from three years of pre-primary school. Six years of free primary education begins at age five, which is followed by up to seven years of secondary education. English is the official language of Mauritius, and French and Creole are widely used. Some other languages are also spoken by different communities.
  Sports and Entertainment
Football here claims the greatest number of participants and fans. Mauritians from all communities make winter horse racing one of the most popular and highly attended sporting activities of the year. And the Black River Gorges National Park, Trou aux Cerfs, an inactive volcano, which is now heavily forested, and the island‘s numerous beaches are surely great places to visit.
  Transportation and Telecommunications
Almost all roadways are paved throughout the island. Most of the country‘s shipping activity is conducted through port facilities at Port Louis. An international airport is located at Plaisance. In 2021, network coverage with the 5G standard was already 4.5% of all inhabitants. The proportion of the population with at least 4G mobile Internet access was 99%.

With a degree in International Business, Li Yangyang never imagined a career in ancient book restoration.
In 2017, after graduating from college, Li was exploring different job opportunities. One day, she saw a cultural technology company looking for ancient book restorers. The company offered training to people without experience. Curious, she sent her application and got the job.
Restoring ancient books is more difficult than it looks. A typical project has more than 20 steps, such as taking photos for records, preparing paper, taking apart books, cleaning, binding(装订) and more. Depending on the damage, Li may restore 30 pages a day—or just one or two.
“Book bricks” is the nickname restorers give to books that have become hard like bricks. Some are so damp that pages stick together, and even the first step—flattening the pages—can take a whole day. One wrong move could tear the page. Aesthetics(美学) is also important. Restoration isn‘t just about “fixing” the book. The page margins(页边距) and backing paper color must match the original.
Li said that beginners need to stay calm and respect the work. “Before starting a restoration, you must ask yourself: Can my skills handle this? If not, it‘s better to seek help from an experienced restorer rather than risk making things worse,” she said. “Over-restoration can be more damaging than leaving the book untouched.” She also warns against working while upset. She once nearly damaged a book out of frustration.
With China placing more value on cultural heritage, ancient book restoration is now growing fast. In October 2024, Li opened her own studio and now accepts orders from both groups and individuals. Since February, she‘s shared videos on Xiaohongshu and Douyin to promote this work. “I hope ancient books can become a more common part of everyday life, so more people can experience them,” Li said.
24.What initially inspired Li to pursue ancient book restoration?
A.Her passion for cultural heritage protection. B.Her determination to challenge herself.
C.Her desire to apply her college major. D.Her curiosity about the job posting.
25.According to the article, what is a major challenge in restoring “book bricks”?
A.Matching the original paper color. B.Safely separating stuck-together pages.
C.Using historical binding techniques correctly. D.Drying the damp paper naturally and slowly.
26.What key advice does Li give to new restorers?
A.Always ask experienced restorers for help. B.Continue working even while in a bad mood.
C.Take on diverse projects to build skills quickly. D.Evaluate their restoration ability before starting.
27.Why does Li share restoration videos on social media?
A.To bring ancient books into everyday life. B.To teach the public basic restoration skills.
C.To promote her studio‘s restoration services. D.To show the challenges of restoration work.

Runners in a relay race pass a stick in one direction. However, merchants passed silk, gold, fruit, and glass along the Silk Road in more than one direction. They earned their living by traveling the famous Silk Road.
The Silk Road was not a simple trading network. It passed through thousands of cities and towns. It was used from about 200 B.C. to about 1,400 A.D., when sea travel offered new routes. It was called the world‘s longest highway. However, the Silk Road was made up of many routes, not one smooth path. They passed through what are now 18 countries. The routes crossed mountains and deserts and had many dangers of the hot sun, deep snow and even battles. Only experienced traders could return safe and sound.
The Silk Road got its name from its most prized commodity. Silk could be used like money to pay taxes or buy goods. But the traders carried more than just silk. Gold, silver, and glass from Europe were much found in the Central Asia and East Asia. Horses traded from other areas changed farming practices in China. Indian merchants traded salt and other valuable goods. Chinese merchants traded paper, which produced an immediate effect on the West. Apples traveled from Central Asia to Rome. The Chinese had learned to graft(嫁接) different trees together to make new
kinds of fruit. They passed this technology on to others, including the Romans. The Romans used grafting to grow apples. Trading along the Silk Road led to worldwide business 2,000 years before the World Wide Web.
The people along the Silk Road did not share just goods. They also shared their beliefs. The Silk Road provided pathways for learning, diplomacy, and religion.
28.What was required to be traders along the Silk Road?
A.Knowing the making of goods. B.Receiving certain special training.
C.Dealing with a lot of difficulties. D.Remembering the entire trade route.
29.Why did the Silk Road become less important?
A.Sea travel provided new routes. B.Silk trading became less popular.
C.It was made up of different routes. D.People needed fewer foreign goods.
30.How could the new technology travel along the Silk Road?
A.People learned from one another. B.People made a living by traveling.
C.People shared each other‘s beliefs. D.People traded goods along the route.
31.What is the best title for the passage?
A.The Silk Road: Pathways for Learning B.The Silk Road: Routes Full of Dangers
C.The Silk Road: the Past and the Present D.The Silk Road: the East Meets the West
D
For future humans to survive long periods on Mars, growing food on the planet is a must.
It would be too costly and risky to rely upon rocket deliveries to meet the food needs of colonists. With this in mind, scientists are exploring ways to improve space farming.
At Wageningen University & Research in the Netherlands, researchers work in a controlled greenhouse. They have identified a way that could improve crop production in factitious Martian soil, with different crops grown together. The method is called “intercropping”, first invented by ancient Maya farmers in what is now Central America. In their experiments, the researchers grew cherry tomatoes, peas and carrots together in small, round containers.
Tomatoes grown in this way produced about double the amount of tomatoes grown alone in the same Martian soil. The tomatoes were also bigger. They flowered and matured earlier, gave more fruit per plant and had thicker stems (茎). The quantity of peas and carrots did not increase with intercropping.
The crops were grown in Martian regolith, a kind of soil with no organic matter. Created by researchers from the American space agency NASA, it is a near-perfect physical and chemical match of real Martian soil.
For now, human bases on Mars are only seen in movies. But NASA is developing ways to send people to Mars in the 2030s. Intercropping involves growing plants with properties that could help each other grow. The method makes the best use of resources including water and nutrients.
The researchers said the tomato plants in intercropping may have benefited from being close to the pea plants. That is because the peas are good at turning nitrogen (氮) from the air, with the help of bacteria introduced into the soil, into an important nutrient. The carrots produced fewer crops from intercropping and the peas had no change. This was probably due to lack of light.
Overall, the tomatoes, peas and carrots grew well in Martian soil, though not as well as in Earth soil in the same greenhouse.
32.What does the underlined word “factitious” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Hard-won. B.Man-made. C.Well-known. D.Long-standing.
33.Why can tomatoes grow well among the three plants?
A.Because of the role of pea plants in intercropping. B.Because of the soil rich in organic components.
C.Because of their adaptation to the environment. D.Because of their little need for sunlight.
34.What is the author‘s attitude towards the results of this experiment?
35.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.Does Life Exist on Mars? B.The Upcoming Journey to Mars
C.New Ways to Improve Space Agriculture on Mars D.Intercropping: A Traditional Agricultural Cropping Pattern

“Art is able to inspire our creativity. 36 ,” says Girija Kaimal, a professor at Drexel University. “But now we discover it might serve an evolutionary(进化的) purpose.” Kaimal has a theory that art-making helps us address the problems that might arise in the future.
Her theory is based on an idea developed in the last few years. 37 . “It uses information to make predictions about what we might do next—and more importantly, what we need to do next to survive,” says Kaimal.
38 . We need to decide what kind of drawing tools to use, what color to choose, and how to translate what we‘re seeing onto the paper. “So what our brain is doing every day, consciously and unconsciously, is trying to imagine what is going to come and preparing to face it,” she says.
Kaimal has seen this played out at her clinical practice as an art therapist with a student, Ivy, who was severely depressed. “She had a sense of hopelessness. She was despairing,” Kaimal recalls.
Ivy took out a piece of paper, colored the whole sheet with a thick black marker, and didn‘t say anything. “She looked at that black sheet of paper for some time,” says Kaimal. “Then she said, ‘Wow. That looks really depressing.’” 39 . Ivy looked around and grabbed some pink clay. And she started making flowers.
“Through that session,” says Kaimal, “the student was able to imagine possibilities and see a future beyond the present moment in which she was depressed. This act of imagination is actually an act of survival. 40 .”
A.Making art can be challenging
B.Our brain is a predictive machine
C.Then something amazing happened
D.Ultimately, interpret what the images mean
E.That‘s why we‘ve been making art since long ago
F.While making art, we can make a series of decisions
G.It is preparing us to imagine possibilities and hopefully survive

It took place in a teacher‘s family. One day, Ben was playing basketball in the living room after school, when he accidentally threw the ball at a vase sitting on the shelf. The vase dropped to the floor and broke into pieces. What made Ben more upset was that the vase was not a common decoration but an antique, which had been handed down through generations since the 18th century. It was also his mother‘s favourite possession. To cover his terrible action, the frightened boy glued the pieces together hastily and put the vase back to its place.
As the mother herself dusted the vase every day, she naturally noticed the cracks that evening. To her surprise, the repair work was actually very good. At dinner time, she asked her boy if he broke the vase. Fearing punishment, the suddenly inspired boy said that a neighbour‘s cat jumped in from the window and he couldn‘t drive it away no matter how hard he tried. It raced around the living room and finally knocked the vase off its shelf. The mother was quite clear that her son was lying, for all the windows were closed before she left for work each morning and opened after she returned. However, in the face of her son‘s nervous look and the suspicious looks of the other family members, Ben‘s mother remained calm. She realized she shouldn‘t just simply blame and punish her son for lying. She came up with another idea.
Before going to bed, the boy found a note from his mother in his room, asking him to go to the study at once. The boy thought he would now be punished but, as he had already lied, he was determined to deny everything to the end, no matter how angry his mum became.
In the study, calmly bathed in the light, his mother‘s face showed no sign of anger. On seeing her son push the door open and cautiously enter, she took a chocolate box out of a drawer and gave him one piece of chocolate.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
The mother said,“This piece of chocolate is a reward for your imagination: a window-opening cat!”__________
